After initially filing in April of 2021, McDougal realised he needed to modify his return, which he did in June of the following year.
As the promised 16-week wait had passed, I began calling the IRS. “They said no, we don’t know what is going on, you simply have to wait,” I was told. McNeil commented.
Since then, McDougal has made numerous calls to the IRS and the Taxpayer Advocate, but to no avail.
“It’s quite upsetting. At the very least, could you offer me a time frame? I understand the IRS is behind schedule and understaffed.” Additional comments were made by McDougal.
McDougal’s tax return is currently in limbo, so she didn’t receive the advanced child tax credit for her four children.
Knowing that money is on the way isn’t helpful when it hasn’t arrived yet. As McDougal put it,
Informing the IRS of the next filing season.
There are still millions of 2020 tax returns to be processed, according to the IRS.
“The IRS has actually re-assigned 1,200 of their personnel to manage that backlog,” said Aradhana Aggarwal, a CPA in Durham.
According to Aggarwal, there are steps you can do for 2021 to avoid having your taxes get stuck in the backlog.
“There can be no room for error when it comes to preparing the tax return and disclosing the child credit. Because of this, they might expect some delays from the IRS “Aggarwal made the comment.
A form 6419 letter from the IRS detailing your advanced child tax credit should have arrived in the mail by now.
Double-check this figure with your online IRS account to make sure it’s accurate.
According to Aggarwal, there will be a small number of instances where the 6419 does not accurately reflect a taxpayer’s real payments. These include situations in which the taxpayer has moved, or in which a bank has refused to accept a direct deposit from the taxpayer.
You may owe more in taxes in 2021 if you had a kid in 2020 and the IRS relied on your 2020 tax return to calculate the advanced child tax credit.
Don’t claim any stimulus money on your taxes in 2021 if you received it, but if you did, don’t claim it again.
If you don’t file electronically, you can also expect your return to be delayed.
“Do not file paper returns since the IRS has millions of returns that have yet to be opened and processed. In other words, if you submit a paper tax return, we don’t know when it will be processed “Aggarwal went on to say.
The IRS claims to process refunds in as little as 21 days for those who file online. We’ve received reports from individuals who filed for the year 2021 and have already gotten their government refunds.
You can check the status of your refund online at irs.gov within 24 hours of submitting your tax return. If you’re getting a refund and want it deposited directly into your bank account, be sure you have the correct bank account information before you file your taxes.
