The first four million tax refunds have been issued by the Internal Revenue Service

Over four million tax refunds have been given for the 2022 tax season as of February 4. On a yearly basis, consumers received $2,201 in reimbursements.

As of the start of the new tax year on January 24, the following are the totals:

  • 16,685,000 in total refunds were received.
  • There were 12,992,000 total returns processed.
  • Refunds totaled 4,330,000.

Since the beginning of this year’s tax season, more than four million refunds have been issued by the Internal Revenue Service. Tax season 2019 is expected to bring around 160 million individual returns.

Many factors, including the timing and filing habits that might change each year, affect weekly results in the first few weeks of the filing season.

There are no year-to-year comparisons at this time since the figures can shift dramatically in the first few weeks of the filing season. However, the refunds for over 30 million returns submitted on the eighth day of last year’s filing season averaged $2,880.

When must I submit my paperwork and make a payment?

Emancipation Day, which falls on April 18, 2022, means that most taxpayers must file and pay their taxes on Monday, April 18, instead of the usual April 15. Because of the Patriots Day holiday in Maine and Massachusetts, taxpayers have until April 19, 2022, to file their taxes.

There is a May 16 deadline for filing and payment for tornado victims in Illinois, Tennessee, and Kentucky and wildfire victims in Colorado. After Monday, October 17, 2022, taxpayers requesting an extension will be able to file their returns.

According to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig, who spoke to the media recently, the April 18 deadline will not be extended, as it was in the previous two pandemic years.
